Welding/Fabrication Apprenticeships

We have a number of exciting job vacancies here at MTL, and we are currently seeking to recruit dynamic and enthusiastic individuals for the following positions:

FLT Driver/Materials Handler

Responsibilities:

  • Efficient unloading, handling and storage of internal material, e.g., steel, stainless steel, aluminium etc. to appropriate holding area
  • Ensuring correct storage inside with location of materials updated on computer
  • Sorting and feeding production with materials to production plans including assisting with maneuvering of materials on to and off the machines, either by crane or manually
  • Housekeeping – ensuring the cleanliness and tidiness of the Departments and Profile Compound are maintained to a high standard at all times to comply with Health and Safety standards
  • Maximise the uptime of the machines by delivering materials in a timely manner
  • Maintain accurate stock representation of the press racks
  • Ensure a Caterpillar Tier 4 stock count is carried out daily

Knowledge, skills & experience required:

  • Fork Lift Truck – Counterbalance Licence – Side loader
  • Ability to work efficiently and build effective working relationships
  • Overhead crane / slinging & lifting skills
  • Experience in a similar role/environment

Storeman

Responsibilities:

  • Checking and booking goods in
  • Labelling goods and storing away correctly
  • Organising stock and racking
  • Dispensing goods and consumables to operators
  • Answering calls
  • Small plant management
  • Stock replenishment
  • Unloading wagons

Knowledge, skills & experience required:

  • Must have worked in a similar environment
  • Must have valid current Fork Lift Truck License i.e. Fork and Counterbalance
  • Basic Computer Skills

Press Operator

Responsibilities:

  • Setting up Brake Presses to produce customer specific products
  • Marking up parts and packing in line with customer specification
  • Robot programming
  • Reading engineering drawings / tool changes etc

Knowledge, skills & experience required: 

  • Previous Press Brake experience is essential
  • Ability to read, understand and follow 1st and 3rd angle projection drawings is essential
  • Knowledge of Cybelec Software programming (advantageous)
  • Competent at using all forms of measuring equipment, i.e. Vernier, rulers, angle measuring devices
  • Knowledge of working with different grades of  metal

Project Engineer

Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for the planning, nesting and expedition of contracts; focussing on laser cutting, press braking and fabrication of mild steel and stainless steel materials. Your duties will include:-

  • Reviewing customers’ order requirements against quotation and producing bill of materials from detailed drawings
  • Creating 2D DXF cutting files and programming/nesting for laser and plasma cutting machines
  • Generating and issuing route cards and manufacturing drawings to both production and scheduling
  • Liaising with internal departments and customers to resolve queries and expedite progress

Knowledge, skills & experience required: 

  • Previous experience within a similar role, ideally within laser cutting, thermal/waterjet cutting, press braking or fabrication and welding processes
  • Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD is essential
  • Strong working knowledge of SigmaNest or similar nesting package is essential
  • Knowledge of SigmaMRP or similar is advantageous although full training will be provided
  • Fully computer literate and fully proficient in Microsoft Office

Laser Operators

Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring material is checked for size, thickness and grade
  • Ensure ‘One offs’ are completed at all times
  • Responsible for quality of components that have been cut on the machine
  • Ensure customer orders on produced On Time and In Full time to required quality standard
  • Marking up of cut parts, cleaning and fettling parts
  • All control cards and nestings are filled in correctly, taking note of any special instructions
  • All machine and personal safety procedures to be followed at all times
  • Ensure the parts are routed correctly to the next part of the process in a timely manner

Knowledge, skills & experience required: 

  • Relevant machine experience
  • Ability to work effectively and use own initiative
  • Slinging and lifting crane experience

Platers / Welders

Responsibilities:

  • To review engineering drawings for parts to be fabricated/welded
  • Perform welding/plating activities
  • Ensure tolerances and parameters are met to satisfy quality and output
  • Ensure production timings are met/exceeded
  • Work as part of a team to produce orders on time and within customer expectation/quality requirements
  • Carry out and record daily/weekly/monthly maintenance and safety checks
  • Ensure correct marking up of component parts

Knowledge, skills & experience required: 

  • Welding and fabrication experience and qualifications
  • Must be coded to BS EN ISO9606-1 fillet and butt weld standard
  • Experienced in MIG and TIG welding with the ability to read engineering drawings
  • Ability to work effectively and use own inititative
  • Good communication at all levels

CNC Machinists

Key Objectives & Duties:

  • Operating machines to produce orders on time and to the correct quality standard
  • Ensure correct marking up of component parts and use of the labelling system
  • Work with Senior Manufacturing Engineer to determine feasibility of machining new products
  • Writing and providing programmes for all machines as required
  • Maintaining and control a current programmer register and tool inventory
  • Working with jigs and fixtures
  • Cleaning and maintaining machines as required

Knowledge & skills required: 

  • Must have previous experience setting and operating vertical machining centres using Fanuc Controls
  • Slinging and lifting crane experience is essential
  • Able to set and maintain a high standard of workmanship
  • Able to work pro-actively and as part of a team to improve productivity and efficiency

Logistics Operator

Key Objectives & Duties:

  • Receiving goods into MTL in line with company procedure
  • Dispatching goods from MTL in line with caompany procedure
  • Ensuring accurate documentation and paperwork is issued, dispatched and received, e.g. packing lists, delivery notes, POD’s etc.
  • To maintain the housekeeping standards in the department

Knowledge & skills required: 

  • Ability to use a computer is essential
  • Fork Lift Truck Licence (Counterbalance)
  • Ability to work efficiently and build effective working relationships
  • Overhead crane / slinging & lifting skills
  • Goods In / Warehousing experience
  • Knowledge of transport legislation beneficial
  • Experience in a similar role

Industrial Paint Sprayer

Key Objectives & Duties:

  • Prepare work to extremely high standards
  • Stripping, fitting and re-building parts where necessary
  • Work to specific production schedules
  • Complete all administrative procedures relating to paint area
  • Adherence to COSHH
  • Maintain a clean, tidy and safe working environment

Knowledge & skills required: 

  • Experience of using 2 pack paint is essential
  • Experience of conventional / pressure pot spray systems is essential
  • Experience of Automotive / Rail / Aircraft / Fine Finishing (desirable)
  • Knowledge of spray bake booth operations and general maintenance (desirable)
  • Previous experience of using an airless spray equipment (desirable)
  • Be fully conversant in both written and verbal English
  • Able to read and understand engineering drawings and masking instructions

Shot Blast Operator

Key Objectives & Duties:

  • Work to specific production schedules
  • Complete all administrative procedures relating to paint area
  • Maintain a clean, tidy and safe working environment
  • Adherence to COSHH
  • Maintain own equipment, change grit valve, check and change grit-hose, dead man’s handle and nozzles etc.

Knowledge & skills required: 

  • At least 1 year’s current experience as a shot blaster
  • Knowledge of blasting grades (Swedish standards etc)
  • Knowledge of recovery blast booth operations / general maintenance (desirable)
  • Lifting and Slinging safe working knowledge / certificate (desirable)
  • Valid Fork Lift Truck License (desirable)
